There are five main mealtime customs that Egyptians have to follow to be known as polite. The customs vary throughout the country between the different religions. When guests are in the home of Muslims, there are some guidlines that one should follow. The left hand is considered unclean at all times and should not be used for eating. Feet should always be tucked under the table and alchohol and pork should never be requested. When one is invited as a guest in a household, guests should bring a small gift such as flowers or chocolate. This is to be polite and show appreciation for the meal they are hosting. Before dinner is a time for socializing and becoming acquainted, often non-alchoholic cocktails are served. Salads and dips, also called Mezze are usually served during this time. Dinner is usually ready between 9 P.M. and 10 P.M., guests seat themselves as the food is being placed in the middle of the table. Bread will most likely served with the meal, which may include vegetables, dishes with rice, soups, and dishes with meat. After dinner, guests move into another room and enjoy some coffee or mint tea. It is very important to compliment the cook.
